To suppose that religious people in the past were naive is to suppose that life did not present itself to them as meaningless and silent as well.

    I like this very much; and from the perspective of a student, I would say that most of the comments I have heard betray a naive interpretation of the past where one at least pretends to feel as though life has just recently became capable of producing true meaning. But to those with greater foresight, the present remains, in so many ways, the same as the past.
