What He Meant

This is way too big a topic for off-the-cuff remarks, but this may remind, as he himself in life did, of the time when liberalism properly understood, and nationalism, were not conjoined only oxymoronically. Whatever else one might say of him, he loved freedom for his people with all of his enormous heart, proving wrong those who thought such a thing in such a place impossible. All that is gone now. As we turn our thoughts towards the images from  Cairo, they fill us with hope… but also the memory of revolutions gone wrong.
